Abstract | The state of the art of instructional technology in the Army TRADOC Schools and Training Centers is reviewed. The report: 1) defines instructional technology, 2) describes the current usages of the products and processes associated with instructional technology, 3) assesses the value or potential value of these products, and 4) describes exemplary programs utilizing these products or processes. The conclusions are reached that the atmosphere within the Army training system is conducive to the use of instructional technology, but that management personnel need training in the design and implementation of instructional models and that greater dissemination of successful programs is needed. It is recommended that: 1) personnel be trained to develop training models utilizing technology; 2) middle and upper management personnel be prepared to administer programs; 3) systems for research, development, evaluation and dissemination in the areas of instructional technology and instructional systems be developed; 4) job performance evaluation instruments be built from real world performance objectives; and 5) all instructional approaches used in training programs be examined to determine the proper function of each.
