| Abstract | This book is organized around the skills a reader needs to move from a beginning reader to one with the ability to evaluate and synthesize. Part I presents an overview of the book and discusses the factors that promote individualization of instruction, it also includes a model of the reading process. Part 2 discusses the four main components of a classroom reading program: instructional systems for teaching reading, instructional materials for the classroom reading program, organizational principles and plans for teaching children in the classroom, and a strategy for assessing student needs. Part 3 focuses on the reading skills that are most important for the child to get started in reading. Part 4 deals with the skills that enable a reader to be functionally literate. Several word recognition skills are described, building on those skills presented in part 3. Part 5 considers the reading skills necessary for using reading as a tool to accomplish various purposes. Competencies of analysis, evaluation, synthesis, and application are discussed under the headings of critical and creative reading, reading in content fields, and study and reference skills. A final chapter reviews the concepts presented and suggests means by which the classroom teacher can evaluate his own reading approach. (WR) |
