Abstract | To stimulate an awareness of the activities of the British and National Institutes of Adult Education, 20 selections from the 43 volumes of "Adult Education" are presented. This collection marks half-a-century's assertion of the necessity of adult education as it has been focused or reflected in the work of the National Institute of Adult Education and of the earlier bodies whose aims and actions have helped to shape it in the present. The National Institute's most recent major publication, "Provision for Adult Education," adult education is described as "in the widest sense any kind of education for people who are old enough to work, vote, fight and marry and who have completed the cycle of continuous education commenced in childhood." However, in the changed circumstances of national life, there is a growing acceptance of the fact that new demands imposed on the adult population for improved techniques and for an open and resilient attitude of mind require a continuing process of education. Some of the entries made in this selection are: (1) The Uses of Leisure, (2) The Adult Business, (3) Unemployment and Education, and (4) Poetry for a Naval Audience. (Editor/CK) |
