Abstract	College and University Environments Scales (CUES), an instrument for characterizing the perceived atmosphere of institutions of higher education, was published by the Educational Testing Service in 1963. CUES is probably the most widely used instrument for describing college environments. The purposes of this study were to: (1) provide more adequate national norms--documenting the range of institutional diversity on each of the items and scales in CUES and the varieties and major types of profiles; (2) undertake a thorough reanalysis of CUES items and scales and other psychometric properties of the instrument; (3) establish a wider network of relationships between CUES scores and a variety of other institutional characteristics; and (4) give the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) information about college environments which would enable them to probe more deeply into the determinants of educational and career choices of college students. One hundred institutions served as a national reference group for the psychometric studies. Eight types of environments were identified. The psychometric properties of the current edition of CUES were found to be generally adequate but capable of improvement. (AF)
