AbstractThe Materials and Activities for Teachers and Children (MATCH Box) project provides for a two-week intensive treatment of a subject on the elementary school level. Each MATCH Box contains materials, equipment and activities that work together to foster the teaching/learning of the particular subject matter. PADDLE-TO-THE-SEA is a social studies unit based on the story "Paddle-to-the-Sea", by Holling C. Holling. It is the story of a small wooden canoe carved by a Canadian Indian Boy and launched by him on its way to the Atlantic Ocean. In tracing Paddle's journey the children see films and filmstrips, make collages and large geographical models, and handle Indian implements, fishing and mining tools, and samples of mine ores. While doing this they learn about the waterways of Northeastern America, and about the cities, industries and ethnic groups which live on or near them. The economics of bartering are realized through role-playing Chippewa, Huron, and French transactions. The children have an opportunity to discuss dreams and Indians, logging camps and belief systems, and, at the end of the unit, are given the opportunity to make their own "voyageur" and launch it on its way to the sea.
