AbstractAT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO'S SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, AN EVALUATION WAS MADE OF GAMING AS AN EFFECTIVE TRAINING DEVICE FOR LOWER RANKING MANAGEMENT AND RANK-AND-FILE PERSONNEL. PARTICIPANTS WERE COLLEGE STUDENTS AND PART-TIME STUDENTS, BELIEVED TO BE LIKE PERSONS INVOLVED IN MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAMS AND PROGRAMS FOR RANK-AND-FILE EMPLOYEES. THE COURSE WAS INTRODUCTORY ACCOUNTING, DECISIONS BEING MADE ON FINANCE AND DISTRIBUTION FUNCTIONS OF A BUSINESS FIRM. THROUGH AN ACCOUNTING FEEDBACK SYSTEM, THESE DECISIONS RESULTED IN FINANCIAL DATA TO BE USED IN MAKING FURTHER DECISIONS. LEARNING AND ATTITUDES WERE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF STUDENTS TAUGHT THE SAME MATERIAL BY THE SAME PROFESSORS USING THE TRADITIONAL PRACTICE SET. THE GAME PARTICIPANTS TENDED TO SURPASS THEIR EXPECTATIONS, APPEARED TO LEARN MORE, LIKED THE COURSE, AND SEEMED TO BE INFLUENCED TOWARD CHOOSING A BUSINESS CAREER. THE NONGAME PARTICIPANTS' EXPERIENCE FAILED TO MEET THEIR EXPECTATIONS OF THE COURSE. COMPANIES INTERESTED IN TRAINING EMPLOYEES IN MECHANISTIC ROUTINE WORK WOULD DO WELL TO CONSIDER THE USE OF GAMES TO STIMULATE INTEREST AND REDUCE THE EXPENSE OF TRAINING (BY REDUCING THE NUMBER OF DROPOUTS AND FROM THE ECONOMIES OF THE SELF-TEACHING ASPECTS).
