(DIPF/Orig.) This article presents the phenomenon of boarding houses for male secondary school pupils in the 19th and early 20th centuries and its significance for the history of education. This still largely unexplored object of German school and youth history is first recorded in terms of definitions and its relevance is classified according to educational statistics. Accordingly, the scant research that exists on the topic of school boarding houses for secondary pupils will be presented, including contemporary publications from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Subsequently, various aspects of the topic are explained in qualitative terms on the basis of preserved letters from secondary pupils who stayed in boarding houses and their parents, as well as prominent examples from poets and scientists. The article concludes with an outlook that develops research perspectives on the history of education for the topic. (DIPF/Orig.) |
