Abstract | "Over the last two decades the EU employment supported by exports to the rest of the world has increased markedly and more and more of these jobs are in the production of services inputs to manufactured goods. In this paper, we provide evidence suggesting that this servicification phenomenon may have contributed to sustain the EU manufacturing employment base. Besides, servicification is prompting a policy reflection in many domains including trade. From a trade policy perspective a main question to consider is whether the four traditional modes of services supply used to frame the market access commitments under the World Trade Organisation's General Agreement on Trade in Service continue to adequately capture a global trade system that is increasingly underpinned by geographically fragmented production structures that are more than ever reliant on services inputs."
