Abstract | The subject of this article lies at the intersection of two research areas: family research and the sociology of migration. In both fields, the role of the culture of origin in immigrant families is a comparatively neglected issue. In traditional family research, the phenomenon of migration has received only little attention; conversely, sociological migration research has for a long time ignored the role of the family. According to recent research findings, the family appears to play a particularly important role as a socialization under conditions of migration. Given these findings, an integration of family research with the sociology of migration is highly desirable. To achieve such an integration, a suitably broad theoretical framework is needed.
