Abstract | The author taught classes in leadership at the "European Humanities University" (partnered by two American universities) in Belarus. With his students and another student group in an American university he collected data about the students' attitudes toward leadership, i.e. the nature, characteristics and qualities of leadership. The results were: "1) in Belarus, there was a harder attitude toward leadership than in the United States; a Belarusian leader was seen as political, persuasive, clever, oppressive, a 'strong ruler'. 2) In the United States, attitudes tended to be softer; students saw leaders as empowering and generative. ... 3) In Belarus there were gender differences in attitudes toward leadership, with females tending to prefer a softer attitude of shared leadership and more open in their disdain for their dictatorial president." The article concludes with a "discussion of the significance of these findings for international education in the former Soviet Union." (DIPF/Bi.) |
