Abstract | Based on interviews with fifty European students at the end of their year abroad, this paper discusses aspects of travelling students' intercultural adaptation. Four main learning areas are outlined. In the first place, the way students familiarise themselves with and master new spatial conditions is examined. Secondly, the "mobility capital" ( language competence, previous experiences, family history, and personality) which induces them to accept the challenge of what sometimes seems like a rite of passage is analysed. Thirdly, some of the social strategies used to become integrated are presented. Finally, the importance of the experience as a "lesson for life" is considered, and the way students draw attention to some of the qualities which facilitate the process of adaptation. (DIPF/orig.) |
