Abstract | Under the heading "Innovation" Interface highlights imaginative innovations from various quarters, which, both through their symbolic value and their practical implications, may have a significant impact on improving knowledge of, and recognition and respect for, the culture of Gypsy and traveller communities.... This issue presents a work jointly compiled by an ethnographer and a photographer. Together they got Gypsy children living in the outskirts of Bordeaux (France) in the Bacalan neighbourhood and its all-Gypsy housing project known as the "Andalusian Village" involved in a photography and writing workshop. Week after week, in groups of four, the children carried out every stage of the process, from deciding what to photograph to developing their own work. The result is a book presenting the children's own photographs and commentaries and outlining the process that went into making them. Teachers and other educators are bound to be excited by such a promising approach, particularly applicable in the framework of certain current European- level projects encouraging the recognition and study of the Gypsy presence in local history.
