Abstract | More than 10% of American school age children attend non-public schools. The paper reports the changes in the non-public school sector over the past thirty years and how they were able to thrive despite government, financial and social pressures. Compared with public schools non-public schools enjoy more autonomy and often achieve better results with less money. A crucial part of non-public schools are religiously affiliated schools.
