Abstract | The formation, structure, and goals of an open-ended psychoeducational support group for people with serious and persistent mental illnesses are described, differentiating psychoeducation from psychotherapy, and professional from peer-led support groups. Major goals are to provide education for illness management and help members combat social isolation, redeem self-esteem and hope, and improve their life situation. Three case vignettes indicate the power of the group to influence members to overcome fears, accept employment consistent with their level of disability, and improve their lives. Realistic issues regarding self-disclosure are discussed. (As Provided). |
