Abstract | In this commentary, the author points out few issues, one being that there are models mislabeled as diagnostic, which deal with linear decompositions of item difficulties rather than estimating multidimensional skill variables. The author discusses the issue that there are many new names for essentially well-known models for multiple simultaneous classifications. He also comments on models that combine multiple skills deterministically, thus mapping multiple skill patterns onto the same conditional probabilities. The author then suggests additional recent and not so recent literature on more exploratory approaches used for diagnosing strategy differences and closes the commentary with some final remarks.
