Abstract | The study of post-Soviet Russia's shadow economic relations, research that has become increasingly extensive in the past ten years, has also focused attention on the system of education. Quite a few articles have been devoted to corruption in educational institutions as well as informal [i.e., unofficial, not necessarily authorized] tutoring. However, there is one field to which Russian experts researching the shadow economy have not paid attention until now. The authors are referring to cheating in education--copying, using crib sheets, and so on. There is undoubtedly a connection between this phenomenon and the shadow economy. To serve as a pilot study investigating cheating in Russia, in May and June 2006 the authors conducted a questionnaire survey of school students and college students in Moscow. The first focus was college students in a leading university (sixty-one second-year economics majors) that is actively combating different varieties of cheating, not just in words but in deeds. The second focus was the students in a Moscow general education school (thirty students in the ninth through eleventh grades). The survey results shed light on a number of problems. This article presents the authors' analyses of the findings from their pilot study. (Contains 7 tables and 14 notes.) (ERIC). |
