Abstract | In this article, the author describes the development of the Virginia Tech American Indian Studies (AIS) program. This program, though a fledgling one, has embodied the guiding principles of an authentic AIS program throughout its brief existence. This program was created in 1999 at the request of some of the state's indigenous peoples and has been guided by a collaborative mandate ever since. Although Virginia Tech's program might not be "time-tested," the author believes that the initiatives they have put in place in a short period provide important models for holistic approaches to American Indian studies.
