Abstract | Reading "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" aloud to her sixth-grade students inspired this author to create a mathematics activity based on budgeting for school supplies for Hogwarts School. In that lesson, each student was assigned a name from the Hogwarts School roster and allotted a different dollar amount for his/her budget. Students loved the Harry Potter context of the problem, and they connected with both the situation and the mathematics concepts involved in the budgeting process. Students' enthusiasm for that activity led the author to connect their upcoming study of fungi to Harry Potter to build on their excitement. Although the references to Harry Potter in the study were not as direct as in the contextualized mathematics problems, the study allowed students to continue the fantasy that they were classmates of Harry's while exploring what was ordinarily a part of their sixth-grade curriculum. In this article, the author presents a description of the fungi study. (Contains 2 figures, 6 resources and 1 online resource.) (ERIC). |
