Abstract | In this article, the authors' focus has been the issue of access to a higher education "from the standpoint of differences in the resource characteristics of families." The authors state that in mapping out educational strategies for their children, families must make a rational choice as they look for the optimal correlation between the prospects that an education can give to their children and the family's resource potential. Furthermore, the following are classified as the "resources of the family": (1) the parents' level of education; (2) the level of their material security; (3) the amount of their savings; and (4) their social status and level of adaptation. The authors also examine which practices of enrolling in institutions of higher learning are prevalent in the capital city and in the provinces. They found out that both in the capital city and the provincial city the widely prevalent assumption is that to achieve anything, a higher education is essential. Nevertheless, the authors state that no matter what kind of resources parents in the provincial city have, the higher education that students acquire there will significantly reduce their chances of acquiring a specialty that is in demand in the labor market and will provide "decent" material and status rewards.
