AbstractThe so-called "digital divide" problem, significant disparities in access to technology between the affluent and impoverished, is a global phenomenon that is most serious in the poorest parts of the world. The millions who struggle daily for enough food, clothing, housing, and transportation, are unable to afford the hardware, software and service charges associated with information and communications technology (ICT). Ironically, in most developing countries, however, there are a privileged wealthy few who may have even more technology than the typical American. Therefore the gap in access to technology between the haves and have-nots is actually greater in the Third World than it is in industrialized countries. The same holds true for schools in these countries. While a few schools for wealthy clients may have the very latest technology, the vast majority of schools in the developing world are unlikely to have a single computer. In this article, the author discusses the huge challenge in bridging the digital divide in the schools of developing countries around the world. (ERIC).
