AbstractJames E. Longhurst and Juanita Capri Brown introduce us to the Five habits of mind practiced in the Glasswing Healing Racism, program, which is designed to foster personal transformation, interpersonal understanding, and racial equity. Longhurst and Brown note that the topic of racism is not typically brought up in mixed company. It can elicit a range of unpleasant emotions--fear, anger, guilt, frustration, shame, and exasperation, to name a few. They comment that it is more convenient to avoid meaningful dialogue about this subject such as: "changing the subject"; "denial"; "minimization"; "avoidance of feelings"; and "silence for self-protection." Yet, as with any important social issues, we must honestly face the reality of racism: No one is free from the effects of racism, whether or not we acknowledge this truth. The program at Glasswing Racial Healing in Oakland, California, holds sessions that provide participants an opportunity to safely and effectively communicate with one another about how they are affected by racism. Facilitators follow guidelines to ensure a safe environment for all participants, recognizing that such an atmosphere makes people more relaxed and able to put their full attention towards not only what others are saying and feeling, but what they themselves are thinking and feeling. Glasswing Racial Healing identifies five fundamental shifts in how we understand and explain racism and, by making these shifts of mindset, participants undergo a transformative process, seeing themselves, others, and their world in an entirely different light, better equipped to impact others and change their world. The five shifts were introduced to the Glasswing in 1997 by Sherlock Graham Haynes, M.Ed, QMHP [Rose Garden Forum Institute, Chapel Hill High School, Durham, North Carolina] and are pathways on the journey toward healing as they allow an expanding of one's capacity to know self and experience the reality of others; The five shifts are: (1) From Material to Spiritual--a pathway that leads to human connection; (2) From Cognitive to Affective--a pathway that leads to compassion; (3) From Certainty to Curiosity--a pathway to genuine understanding; (4) From Solution to Transformation--a pathway that leads to courage; and (5) From Debate to Dialogue--a pathway that leads to listening and learning together. The Five Shifts are practical tools for promoting a tipping point of shared consciousness. Embracing the Five Shifts turns each moment into an opportunity to transform one's self and, as a result, others. (ERIC).
