Abstract | Teachers are leaving the field of education in significant numbers. These numbers were further heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Districts and campuses are constantly challenged with recruiting, hiring, and training new teachers, especially in urban schools with low socio-economic and minority students. Although teacher attrition is a problem that has plagued districts and campuses over the past decade, the literature does not provide many studies with qualitative designs that examine how the support of the campus principal influences teacher attrition. The current study sought to gain insight into the perceptions of teachers on how the support of the campus principal influences teacher attrition in charter schools in a North Texas charter district. The current study used a phenomenological research approach. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted to examine the perceptions of the influence of principal support on teacher attrition for teachers completing their first five years of teaching in a North Texas charter district. Findings from the current study revealed the importance of the campus principal in providing opportunities for professional development, teacher collaboration, and a culture that fosters trust and collegial relationships.
