Abstract | Post-traditional students, also known as non-traditional or adult students, enrolled in an evening baccalaureate degree program are invisible on campus, often misunderstood and under-researched by higher education despite the fact that the number of adult students returning to college continues to increase each year. This study explored the experiences of post-traditional students enrolled in an evening baccalaureate degree program at a public university to provide a better understanding of the unique needs and struggles of these students. The study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to explore the lived experience of six post-traditional students. This study employed Bourdieu's Social Capital Theory as a theoretical guide, focusing on the inequity of access to institutional resources and institutional structures that favor traditional-age day students but often ignore post-traditional evening students. Four major themes emerged which provided insight into the decision-making process, student expectations, institutional and external obstacles and the perception of the university by the six participants. Obstacles such as inflexible institutional and academic policies and the lack of courses available to students at night threatened the completion of a degree. The study aimed to address the gap in research on post-traditional night students enrolled in a campus-based baccalaureate degree program. Results indicated that universities can improve service to post-traditional students by providing flexible course options and examining how academic and institutional policies impact post-traditional students.
