Abstract | Many assistant principals are not provided the opportunity or do not engage in instructional leadership behaviors or responsibilities. This results in some being less qualified entering principalship or even reluctant to pursue principalship. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the exhibition of instructional leadership behaviors of assistant principals in six selected Alabama school systems using The Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS) as well as explore their readiness to pursue principalship. The theoretical framework Philip Hallinger used in the development of PIMRS stems from behaviors in three domains, defining school's mission, managing the instructional program, and promoting a positive school/learning climate. The findings of the study show that many assistant principals are not engaging in managing the instructional program as much as other areas. Results also show that little experience with instructional behaviors was evident with less years of experience. As it relates to readiness to pursue principalship, although some were planning to pursue principalship, they were not exhibiting behaviors related to managing the instructional program as much as they were the other domains. A recommendation for practice includes mentoring for principals and assistant principals. Additional research should be conducted to determine: (1) why assistant principals are not engaging in these instructional leadership practices more, (2) why school principals are not including assistant principals, and (3) examining the academic performance of schools that engages assistant principals in instructional leadership behaviors versus those that do not.
