Abstract | The pursuit of an authentic education is important. The need to understand one's role, rights, and responsibilities within a society is paramount. Further important is to know the makeup of the society in which one lives--the history, people, and values. Much of this knowledge is gained through the social studies instruction, beginning at the elementary level of education. An absence of social studies equates to an absence knowledge. Such knowledge is needed at the elementary school level to prepare students for secondary education and adulthood. Recent educational trends have led to a reduction or exclusion of elementary social studies instruction. Legislative changes in education have increased testing mandates for specific curricular content, leading many educators to teach to the test. Social studies are often neglected in the classroom since it is not a tested subject on standardized assessments. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify how curricular narrowing of social studies is revealed in elementary grade students overall learning and attainment of critical knowledge. The research method was a qualitative case study approach using both teacher surveys and personal interviews with participating educators. The participants were a random sample of 12 elementary educators teaching grades K-5 in public schools. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
