Abstract | Studies have suggested that the impact of formal and informal mentoring programs have had a positive impact on young African American males from K-12. However, at the college level, African American males, in the United States, struggle to stay in college. African American males have been underachieving educationally, since slavery was abolished and to this date over 67.6 percent of freshmen, African American males, fail to graduate from colleges and university throughout the country. Through the review of past studies this study will seek to identify how having a mentor, helped eight professionally employed African American men graduate from four-year colleges and universities, during their undergraduate career. In addition, the study will examine the influence that these mentors have had on them beyond college. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
