Abstract | This report describes a problem-based learning project focusing on the guidance received by superintendents and principals in Missouri public schools in regard to ensuring social justice for all students. Four groups of students emerged as the central focus of this project: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ), gender, special education, and race. Current research findings suggest the importance of leadership in ensuring social justice for all students. The goal of the project was to identify areas of strength and weakness in the guidance given to Missouri school leaders to help to ensure social justice in Missouri schools. The project team read foundational literature concerning leadership's role in ensuring social justice for all students. A knowledge base was built surrounding the four constructs of LGBTQ, gender, special education, and race in regard to social justice issues encountered in schools. The team developed a survey. Survey questions were designed with analysis in mind, specifically utilizing a design approach around the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) Professional Standards for the Superintendency. Additionally, questions were designed through synthesis of problem themes with question stems in order to provide a thorough examination of the problem through the lens of each of the four constructs. The design of a sentence stem with each group was intentionally developed to yield results in each construct and learn to what degree of effectiveness leadership received guidance. All Missouri superintendents and principals were invited to participate in the survey. Survey results were analyzed and synthesized into the eight AASA standards. Recommendations and implications were generated based on project findings to improve the level of guidance given to administrators to ensure social justice to all students.
