Abstract | In 1998, George Soros and Herb Sturz seized an opportunity to significantly improve children's lives by founding The After-School Corporation (TASC). They believed that increasing the quality and availability of after-school programs, with the ultimate goal of changing public policy, could transform the potential for many New York City kids who lacked access to supplemental activities. This report begins by giving an overview of TASC, its history, and its accomplishments over the last 15 years. Part II of this report, "Understanding the TASC Model," describes TASC's original goals, principles and design choices. Part III, "From After-School to ExpandED Schools: The Model Evolves," explains major turning points in TASC's evolution. The authors highlight "TASC's Value and Accomplishments" in Part IV and conclude in Part V, "The Future," with some takeaway thoughts. Three appendices are included: (1) TASC Board of Directors and Staff; (2) TASC Funders ($25,000+), 1998-2014; and (3) TASC's Community-Based and Cultural Partners, 1998-2014. (ERIC). |
