AbstractIn his 1887 biennial report to the General Assembly, Kentucky Agriculture and Mechanical College President James Patterson wrote that competition was so strong that only the educated individual would give the state the comparable advantage in production and trade necessary to compete against peers for academic dominance in scientific and technical fields. Over the years, various presidents steered the university's successor, University of Kentucky, and each sought to increase the university's income while bolstering its ability to compete regionally and nationally. Throughout postsecondary education, various researchers note the juxtaposition of increasing demands for university income against proportionally diminishing direct public appropriations. This condition leads many to pursue alternative revenues streams. To explore the applicability of other research regarding income change and provide more in-depth exploration of actors and events within a public research university, it is important to ask questions specific to individual institutions. The research uses the case study method to explore and evaluate whether the University of Kentucky adapted its pursuit of general and educational income over time resulting in enhanced alternative revenue streams such as endowment income. Further, it explores proportional relevance endowment income and its evolution over a period from 1920 to 2010. It evaluates persons and factors affecting endowment income change, and asks whether that change occurs at the periphery of the institution or at its academic core. This study reveals historic income detail and transforms it for modem categorization and analysis. Through relevant income detail and qualitative exploration of primary documents, it reveals and analyzes discrete details about the evolving role of general and educational endowment income at the University of Kentucky. By focusing on one university, this study attempts to better comprehend relationships within and between the university and its income benefactors. The expectation is that knowledge of how this university evolved will contribute to comprehension of how other institutions adapt to income change and use of alternative revenue streams.
