AbstractThe success of a student within the academic environment is a result of interaction of various factors. This study was designed to consider how personality similarity between the advisor and advisee may enhance advising, student satisfaction, and grade point average effort. The study concentrated on the relationship of personality characteristics of both advisor and advisee and what influence compatibility of personality between the two has on the effectiveness of advising, student satisfaction, and grade point average (GPA). With this in mind, the study used the group of student advisee/advisor as an independent variable--that is, similar and dissimilar personality characteristic pairs of advisors and advisees based on their personality profiles as measured by the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised. Students' satisfaction and GPA were the dependent variables. The key research questions included the following: (a) Will students have higher levels of satisfaction and greater GPAs if their advisor's personality profile matches their own? and (b) Will students have lower levels of satisfaction and lower GPAs if their advisor's personality is different from their own? The similarity of advisor and advisee personality profiles was the focus for this dissertation. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
