AbstractThis study, jointly sponsored by 22 member associations from the Council of Higher Education Management Associations (CHEMA), identifies the forces of change that are building for higher education and seeks to understand their potential implications. Specifically, CHEMA sought to: (1) examine how administrators and officials who are engaged in college and university support functions, and who are leaders within their respective CHEMA member organizations, anticipate that higher education will change over the next ten years; (2) identify the drivers of change and discuss the types of opportunities and threats these leaders foresee for higher education, their institutions, and their functional areas; and (3) understand how prepared institutions are to manage change, and identify areas in which these leaders believe higher education can act to shape its own future. The study indicates that heightened competition, changing revenue streams, demographics, technology, and altered public perceptions are creating serious threats and opportunities for higher education. The following are appended: (1) Participating Associations; and (2) Individuals Interviewed. (Contains 10 tables and 9 figures.)
