AbstractThe Heritage Education Program mission is to promote stewardship of cultural and paleontolgical resources so present and future generations can learn from and enjoy their heritage on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands, without harm to the resources. This document defines a five year framework for BLM's educational efforts to save its vanishing past. A brief history in the document is augmented by a more detailed exposition of the program history in appendix (2). The document describes how BLM will build upon its past efforts to reach out to a broader audience, to explain the message of the United States' vanishing past, and enlist their efforts to preserve and protect America's heritage. Project Archaeology will continue to be the centerpiece of the youth education strand, enhanced by such BLM products as articles in professional journals, the "Young Stewards Club", and the "History Mystery Detectives." The Heritage Education Program will expand to reach the users and abusers of public lands through the new Archaeological Resources at Risk Outreach Works (ARROW) project aimed at the adult audience. BLM's Heritage Education Program will use external partnerships as the basis for forming a larger heritage education consortium of interested entities to promote preservation and protection of cultural resources.
