Abstract | This instructional packet is designed to introduce students to primary source material by having them participate in an historical "what might have been." Students engage in critical thinking and document analysis, and through the process learn about Operation OVERLORD and World War II in general. This spy kit centers on Operation OVERLORD (the Allied plan for D-Day) and allows students to play the role of fictitious German agents who penetrate General Dwight Eisenhower's headquarters to secretly photograph, within a short time period, several critically important operations, planning, and intelligence documents. The spy kit scenario, appropriate for high school students, is one of several formats which can be designed to teach students about World War II and can be readily modified to fit the needs of individual classes and students. The packet contains: (1) "Teacher's Guide"; (2) "Objectives"; (3) "Descriptions of Documents" (12 primary sources); (4) "Historical Background"; (5) "Glossary of Selected Terms"; (6) "Evaluate a Primary Source"; (7) "Evaluate a Web Site"; (8) "Web Sites"; (9) "Learning Activity"; (10) "Select Bibliography: D-Day" (20 items); and (11) "Select Bibliography: World War II" (13 items). Also included are the primary source historical documents. The packet contains historical documents for interdisciplinary use, such as leaflets in French, Dutch, Norwegian, German, and Spanish, maps and posters in foreign languages, and photographs. (BT) |
