AbstractA study investigated linkages between adult community education (ACE) and mainstream vocational education and training (VET) in Australia, which enable people to move between the two sectors in their pursuit of vocational learning, and the ways in which linkages might be improved or new ones developed. The data from the study were derived from 69 surveys completed by ACE provider personnel; 383 surveys by ACE students, and a total of 68 interviews conducted with personnel from industry and the ACE sector in New South Wales and South Australia. The study found many strengths of ACE, including an informal and friendly learning environment; relaxed and supportive learning delivery; accommodations for diverse students; local management; flexible timetables, delivery modes, and course content; and personal interest of tutors. The study profiled existing linkages between ACE and VET and suggested the following strategies to improve them: (1) develop and improve guidelines, definitions, and procedures; (2) appoint designated linkage personnel; (3) provide training to ACE staff in pathways and linkages; (4) provide training to ACE staff in industry standards and practices; (5) collaborate and cooperate with mainstream VET; (6) structure ACE to complement mainstream VET; and (7) review existing linkages and develop new ones. Marketing strategies for ACE and VET also were developed through the study. (The report includes 23 figures, 10 tables, and 36 references. The survey instruments are appended to the report.) (KC)
