Abstract | This curriculum guide offers a broad range of activities for a one-semester college freshman orientation course covering topics chosen based on research findings and a survey of vocational rehabilitation counselors and college instructors who teach deaf and hard of hearing students. Instructional activities stress "active doing" rather than reading or listening. The curriculum covers nine major topics: (1) the college structure, rules and resources; (2) time management; (3) study and test taking skills; (4) stress management; (5) self-esteem; (6) healthy lifestyles; (7) personal finances; (8) diversity; and (9) leadership. For each topical area, a general purpose is stated, then resources are identified, and specific instructional activities are described. Attached supplements include a sample syllabus, suggested involvement activities, a list of benefits and goals of a college education, and a student evaluation form. (DB) |
