AbstractThe Individuals with Disabilities Education Act entitles each family with an eligible infant or toddler to service coordination at no cost to them. This publication sets forth guidelines and describes the vision for how service coordination will be provided to families in Colorado. The publication, in English and Spanish versions, notes that effective service coordination is provided in a manner that embraces possibilities and giftedness; values and respects each family's individuality; and is built upon strong, healthy, professional relationships between service coordinators and families. Section 1 of the publication presents Colorado's vision for service coordination, created by professional service coordinators, service providers, parents who have used service coordination, and parents who have provided service coordination for their own and other families. Sections 2 through 4 relate to the fundamental themes of Possibilities, Families, and Relationships, and contain basic guidelines and stories that illustrate the guidelines. Section 5 provides suggestions for families in selecting a service coordinator. Section 6 presents questions for service coordinators to use with families, identifying critical issues and priorities for each family. A service coordination checklist details procedures from referral through the IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan) meeting and ongoing IFSP development and implementation. Stories about service coordination complete the publication. Included is a reminder to service coordinators to recognize their own professional and personal burnout levels and to identify their own concerns, priorities, resources, recreations, supports, and strengths.
