Abstract	This lesson is based on the National Register of Historic Places registration file, "Manassas National Battlefield Park" and other sources. The lesson could be used in units on the Civil War. Students strengthen their skills of observation and interpretation in the study of history and geography and gain practice in analyzing primary documents. The lesson explains that the first major confrontation of the Civil War took place at Manassas, Virginia, on July 21, 1861 in a farm's fallow field and that it claimed 5,000 casualties. It points out that the battle's importance lay in the realization that the struggle between North and South was more an apocalyptic event than the romantic adventure earlier envisioned.
