| Abstract | This report examines costs of higher education in New Jersey, comparing the state's system of higher education and its individual sectors with national counterparts. The comparison takes into account such factors as differences in the cost of living and the size and relevant structural characteristics of a state's higher education system. In examining state resources allotted to the system, the report concludes that higher education in New Jersey is relatively well supported considering the small size of the system and the large proportion of students (38 percent) who attend college out of state, and notes that it is especially generous in the amount of funding provided for student assistance programs. Considering sector resources, the report concludes that although the state's percentage contribution to revenues for the state colleges, Rutgers University, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey is higher than average for identified peer states, New Jersey's percentage contribution to community colleges is below the national average. Considering sector spending, the report finds that spending by public research universities and independent institutions is less than peer institutions, but spending by state college and community college sectors is higher than at peer institutions.
