AbstractThis book contains a unit on science and global education that is designed to enable students to gain a practical understanding of the world they live in and the confidence to take appropriate action as responsible global citizens. This unit emphasizes cooperative learning that is experiential and participatory. Teachers and students are encouraged to explore the interconnections between global concerns such as food supply, biodiversity, resource use and distribution, water, and energy. Some of the activities explore connections between traditionally defined subject areas. The activities serve as models of how to integrate global education into the science program. The unit is divided into four sections: (1) Water and the Environment; (2) Living Things and Biodiversity; (3) Energy and Resources; and (4) Food Supplies. Each section contains activities and suggestions for further study along with background information on the theme. Because these themes reemerge over the three junior high school years, the activities can be used with increasing sophistication depending upon the grade level and characteristics of the students with whom they are being explored. For each activity or group of activities, there is also a statement about the curricular fit with the Alberta Program of Studies in Canada. (JRH)
