Abstract | This address by the Association's president outlines the role of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the medical education community in responding to the changing nature of the American health care system and medical education. It focuses on: (1) establishing true medical school-community partnerships; (2) elevating prevention and health maintenance; (3) addressing social problems, such as substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and violence; (4) containing health care costs; (5) harnessing information technology; (6) fostering racial, ethnic, and gender parity; (7) solidifying status with policymakers; and (8) restructuring and downsizing, including helping meet workforce needs, transforming teaching hospitals, developing regional education consortia, becoming a learning network, and creating a permanent planning process.
