| Abstract | This classroom unit was developed for use in grades 4-6 to help teach the concept of solid waste management. The teacher's guide provides an overview of the issue of solid waste disposal, a description of government, industry, and consumer roles in resolving the solid waste issue, and four lessons involving sanitary landfills, the reduction of garbage, recycling and composting, and utilizing solid waste incineration to produce energy. Separate support materials include an interactive wall chart, four student worksheets related to the four lesson topics, a crossword puzzle to assess students' knowledge of the solid waste issue, a take-home activity to encourage parent involvement, charts and graphs appropriate as overhead visuals, and a student evaluation card.
