AbstractBecause disadvantaged children rarely receive extra assistance or encouragement, the National Black Child Development Institute created Each One, Reach One: The Spirit of Excellence, a comprehensive tutorial program designed to improve the academic skills and self-esteem of African American children to help them achieve. The program, originally launched in two national demonstration sites in Detroit (Michigan) and Greensboro (North Carolina), was designed to use the whole community to give special attention to children whose family resources are limited. Five factors are emphasized in helping children learn: (1) parent and family involvement; (2) role models from all facets of the community; (3) personal commitment from volunteers; (4) safe and stimulating settings and one-on-one tutoring; and (5) an emphasis on the rich traditions of African culture. More specific guidelines for program implementation are given, including advice on recruiting and retaining volunteers and program evaluation. This manual provides the schools with ways of establishing an outstanding tutorial program. Five selected resources are listed for further reading. (SLD)
