| Abstract | A two-phase study to supply information on supply and demand of K-12 educators was requested by Oregon's Joint Boards of Education to provide information needed to prepare for reforms called for in the Oregon Educational Act for the 21st Century (HB 3565). Specific information sought included employment experiences and aspirations of recent licensees in Oregon, adequacy of teacher preparation for current classroom responsibilities and for HB 3565, and training that may be needed to respond to the HB 3565. Phase 1 examined the characteristics of the population of educators (N=7,625) licensed in Oregon between 1989 and 1991. Phase 2 surveyed a sample of individuals (N=566) from the Phase 1 population. Teachers indicated that the most important responsibilities of their current assignments would also be most important in the future context created by school reform. Teachers felt that their college programs provided adequate preparation for most, but not all, of the top-rated areas of teacher responsibility. Additional findings indicate that: (1) specialty area oversupply or undersupply may exist in Oregon's employment market; (2) the need for multicultural diversity in school staffing is unlikely to be met by the recently licensed educator pool; and (3) in the next few years there will be a significant need for preservice and inservice training to respond to reform programs and the socio-cultural needs of students.
