Abstract | Nova University is a nontraditional university that offers practitioner-oriented, field-based doctoral programs, including a program in child and youth studies. This program begins with a seminar called Leadership I, and ends 3 years later with a Leadership II seminar. Instruction takes place in clusters, or groups of professionals in a geographic area. This paper describes of offering of Leadership I and II to a cluster of students between 1989 and 1992. Leadership I introduced concepts of leadership theory and research and strategic planning. Students designed a 3-year plan for their professional development, maintained a diary, and identified issues relevant to social problems. Leadership I examined leadership at the levels of self, organization, and society, and the three leadership activities of analysis, envisioning the future, and transforming visions into action. In the Leadership II seminar held 3 years later, students' professional development plans were reviewed, and visions and plans for future projects were developed. Appendices include various materials relevant to the leadership seminars, education in general, and Nova University. (BC) |
