Abstract	Brief descriptions are provided of 16 model literacy initiatives undertaken by community colleges in conjunction with local businesses or community groups. Following introductory comments by Barbara Bush, Tony Zeiss, H. James Owen, and Roy Romer, "Literacy: America's Great Deficit," by Earnestine Thomas-Wilson-Robertson and Tony Zeiss, reviews trends affecting the workforce including demographic changes, population migration, access to education and jobs, workplace diversity, women and minorities in the work force, and urban problems. The bulk of the report consists of project descriptions, outlining the unique features, funding sources, operations, and outcomes of the following programs: (1) Developmental English and the Reading Center (C. S. Mott Community College, Michigan); (2) Targeted Learning Center (Clackamas Community College, Oregon); (3) People Educating People and Basic Education Skills Training (College of DuPage, Illinois); (4) Project SPHERE and Project ABLE (Community College of Rhode Island); (5) FOCUS (Delaware County Community College); (6) Center for Basic and Pre-Technical Education (Hawkeye Institute of Technology, Iowa); (7) Center for Adult Basic Education and Literacy (Joliet Junior College, Illinois); (8) Filene's Workplace Education Project (Massachusetts Bay Community College); (9) Regina Workplace Literacy Program (Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College); (10) Workplace Literacy Skill Builders Program (Mt. Hood Community College, Oregon); (11) Initiative for Work Force Excellence (Piedmont Technical College, South Carolina); (12) Columbia-Willamette Workplace Literacy Consortium (Portland Community College, Oregon); (13) Vision 2000 Learning Centers (Pueblo Community College, Colorado); (14) Academic Assistance Program (Quincy Junior College, Massachusetts); (15) Learning Development Center/Stein Initiative (Red Rocks Community College, Colorado); and (16) Perdue Self Development Project (Vincennes University, Indiana). In the concluding chapters, Tony Zeiss and Robert M. Ady consider literacy and work force development as major national challenges. (PAA)
