Abstract | This report on the training of child care staff in Delaware discusses issues relating to child care staff training and the quality of care in the state. Guided discussions and interviews were used to elicit descriptions of training, appropriate content and formats for training, a career development system, resource centers, and problems related to child care staff training. Part I provides information about procedures used for data collection and areas of consensus in the provider community. Part II, which covers problems related to training, identifies assumptions and briefly explores research on training and alternative solution strategies. Part III offers recommendations and implementation suggestions for a career development system, an evaluation system, resource centers, and cost projections. A vision for the future of child care in Delaware, a 10-year plan, and a summary of recommendations are provided in Part IV. Appendices include focus group reports, reports of interviews, questions used with focus groups, a list of members of the Delaware Child Care Training Advisory Committee, a provider profile instrument, and an outline of career ladder and professionalism qualifications in the early childhood field in Delaware.
