AbstractThe New Teacher Staff Development program was designed to introduce new teachers to the New York City School System. Training models were based on the latest research and currently used nationwide staff development programs, focusing on subject areas as well as levels of learning ability. The specific goals of the program were to help new teachers develop and improve skills in the following areas: (1) understanding the basics of lesson development and presentation; (2) using curriculum materials to guide lesson planning; (3) organizing and managing the classroom; (4) learning attendance procedures, record keeping, and Board of Education policies; (5) gaining an awareness of students with special needs and knowing how to meet these needs; (6) establishing working relationships with parents; and (7) feeling comfortable in the role of teachers, and feeling part of the profession and of the New York City school system. This report presents highlights of the major findings of the 1988-89 program evaluation. Based on these findings, and other information contained in the report, specific recommendations are made.
