Abstract	Commissioned by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), this monograph presents the highlights of the history of organized efforts to improve education for journalism in the United States and to stimulate studies in the field of mass communication. Following brief biographies of the AEJMC founding fathers, Willard Grosvenor Bleyer and Walter Williams, the major portion of the monograph is divided into three parts interspersed with other biographical vignettes and set off by two interludes. The first part summarizes the founding years (1912-1938) of the American Association of Teachers of Journalism (AATJ) and the Association of American Schools and Departments of Journalism (AASDJ). The 40-year history of the American Society of Journalism School Administrators (ASJSA) is outlined in an interlude. The second part discusses the formative years of ASJSA, the Association for Education in Journalism (AEJ), and the American Council on Education for Journalism (ACEJ) from 1939-1963 while impressions of more than 50 years of conventions are conveyed in the second interlude. The third part recounts the history of AEJMC and the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication (ASJMC) from 1964-1987.
