AbstractA program was developed by a nurse/counselor to provide individual education and counseling for mothers having high-risk infants admitted to a Special Care Nursery after delivery. The program begins as soon after delivery as possible and evaluates the mother's skills, attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge of childrearing practices necessary for caring for her own infant. The mother's concerns, fears, and emotional stage are considered. Through the evaluative interview, the mother's areas of need and interest are noted. Subsequent visits provide information and counseling to meet the mother's individual needs. In-nursery time is available for physical contact and learning under special care. The program seems to aid mother-infant relationships and increase mothers' interest in these special infants who are often at risk for developmental delays, abuse, and failure to thrive. A trend analysis of the program points to additional concerns present for these mothers. These concerns include a sense of loss of personal identity and attention, and feelings that at-home care will be overwhelming. The patient assessment instrument is appended. (Author/RH)
