Abstract | Intended for students in elementary school, secondary school, and adult classes, the curriculum guide presents information about human factors and priorities in three kinds of disasters: wilderness emergencies, natural disasters, and man-made disasters. The guide contains lesson plans in each containing objectives, desired understanding, and information for students. Specific lesson plans cover the factors affecting the body in survival situations, the priorities of surviving the unexpected, body enemies during unexpected emergencies, psychological aspects of wilderness survival, energy loss in the wilderness, the effect of heat and cold on the body, improvising wilderness needs, dealing with natural disasters (tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, tidal waves, earthquakes, blizzards, lightning, fires, and epidemics), and coping with man-made disasters (pollution, warfare, civil disorder, and universal risk and modern technology--automobile, airplane, and boating accidents). The guide also includes some teaching strategies, several lesson plans, information about improvised emergency preparedness kits, and a list of recommended books. (SB) |
